Pelikan's DUO concept has become one of the most quietly brilliant ideas in the modern fountain pen market. Take a pen. Choose an ink whose color was developed expressly for it. Box them together. Sell the package at a price that makes the pairing feel inevitable rather than indulgent. The M205 DUO Blue-Marbled, released in January 2025, is the latest and perhaps most visually assured execution of that formula.

The Design

The Blue-Marbled finish is a return to territory Pelikan knows well. The marbled demonstrator aesthetic traces a clear lineage back to the classic Pelikan striated celluloid barrels of the 1930s and 40s — barrels that are now actively collected and trade at premiums that would astonish the engineers who designed them. The 2025 interpretation is less about historical nostalgia than about optical complexity: the swirling blues range from near-indigo at the edges of each marble stroke to a clear aquamarine where the resin thins.

The M205 chassis is an old friend. It is smaller than the flagship M800, more comfortable than the M600 for writers with smaller hands, and considerably lighter than either. The piston mechanism clicks with the satisfying precision that Pelikan has refined across decades. There is no play, no wobble; the blind cap turns in smooth quarter-steps.

Writing Experience

Pelikan's steel nibs have been on a steady upward trajectory for the past several years. The M205 EF and F nibs remain some of the most reliable fine-line steel nibs in production. They start on first stroke, flow consistently, and respond to gentle pressure with modest line variation.

Paired with the bundled Edelstein Blue-Marbled ink — a blue-teal with moderate shading and a faint golden sheen — the combination writes with a character that the components alone would not quite achieve. The ink leans slightly toward turquoise in broad strokes; on finer paper it contracts toward a deeper slate.

The Verdict

The M205 DUO is not a statement pen. It does not announce itself. It is a well-made, attractively finished fountain pen matched with ink developed to flatter it — and at its price point, that is exactly what it promises to be. For a first serious fountain pen, for a desk pen, for a gift: the DUO format continues to make a compelling case.
